All Drawn by Horses
James Arnold
All drawn by Horses by James Arnold, pub 1979, 140 pages plus index, illustrated throughout with line drawings and b+w photos, 9" x 10" hardcover + dj some rubbing to edges otherwise good condition.

A celebration of horse drawn transport, this book combines the authors superb illustrations - at the same time technically accurate and decorative - with descriptive text. In these days of uniformity it is difficult to appreciate the immense variety of types and designs in general use right up to the 1920s. Especially during the nineteenth century there were goods and tradesmen's vehicles for every purpose and an infinite variety of carriages and carts to suit the individual taste of private users. An introduction summarises the historical background and technical development and a glossary defines the types. Individual chapters cover: public transport - coaches, omnibuses, charabancs and hackney carriages; private coachman and owner-driven carriages; gigs and carts; heavy-draught goods vehicles; and van-draught transmens carts. A series of interesting old photographs shows a variety of vehicles in use - all drawn by horses.
